In 2011 an extreme marine heatwave combined with an inland rainfall event caused the waters around shark bay and particularly Monkey Mia to rise to around 30 degrees. The water remained at 30 degrees for roughly 90 days allowing and algal bloom to thrive. The water turned black the breaking down the chain reaction of photosynthesis and the algae attacked the seagrass.
Shark Bay is home to the worlds largest seagrass meadows and worlds largest marine carbon sink, 4000 sqkm, as a result of this die off we lost 37% or roughly 1200kms of seagrass meadows
Shark bay is home to 12 different species of Seagrass. The bay is a perfect location for seagrass to grow when conditions are right.
We are growing 'Amphibolis Antarctica' species of seagrass.
Seagrass is an excellent plant for storing Carbon. The carbon released into the atmosphere from the 2011 die off event was the equivalent of running 800,000 cars non stop for 2 years.
The sandbags are 100% biodegradable and create a substrate for seagrass to grow. They are also easy for us to plant seagrass and transport onto the ocean floor.
The seagrass meadows of shark bay are the most important place in the world to conserve the endangered 'Dugongs' Shark bay is home to the worlds desist dugong population , 10% of what dugongs remain in the world.
Who We Are
We are a dedicated team of ocean enthusiasts committed to revitalizing our underwater ecosystems at Shark Bay. As a not-for-profit organization, our mission is to collect seagrass seedlings and facilitate their regrowth on the sea floor, ensuring a healthier marine environment for generations to come.
Our love for the ocean drives us to take action. Seagrass meadows are vital habitats that support marine life, improve water quality, and combat climate change. By restoring these essential ecosystems, we not only protect biodiversity but also enhance the resilience of our coastal communities.
Join us in our mission! We believe that everyone can play a part in ocean conservation. Whether you’re a volunteer, a donor, or simply an advocate for our seas, together we can make a significant impact. Let’s work hand in hand to restore the beauty and health of our oceans.
